The second most common 'False Alarm' call that the Albertville Fire Department responds to are residential carbon monoxide detectors (CO) alarms 'chirping' and the homeowner or resident is unsure of why the alarm is chirping, or what to do.
Below are some CO alarm maintenance tips, installation advice, and information on types of CO alarms.
By following these simple tips, you can keep yourself and your family safer and hopefully reduce the change of false alarm calls to your residence.
CO ALARM MAINTENANCE:
- The two most common reasons for the CO alarm 'chirping' are old batteries and expired CO alarms.
- CO alarms should be tested at least once a month by pushing the test button on the CO alarm.
- CO alarm batteries should be changed every six months.
- If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries.
- Unlike smoke alarms, CO alarms have an average lifespan of only five to seven years and should be replaced five years after their manufacture date.
CO ALARM INSTALLTION:
- CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes, or standards.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for placement and mounting height.
- Choose a CO alarm that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
- A CO alarm should be mounted low on the wall.
HOW TO CHOOSE AN ALARM:
- The Albertville Fire Department prefers CO alarms that plug into a wall outlet AND have LCD numbers as part of the alarm. The readable numbers alert to changes in carbon monoxide concentration in the vicinity at any time. They can also show low battery or error messages if the CO alarm is "chirping".
- The Albertville Fire Department does not recommend that homeowners install combination smoke/CO alarms, because they may be confusing for homeowners and residents to understand what warning is being given.
